Over the years I've heard a lot of old (and varied) wives tales, but the ones I like the most are about the ideal moment to make a wish so that it will come true. Below are the ones I remember the most (and end up doing the most), apart from before blowing out candles on a birthday cake . Whether or not they are the most effective, well, take your unused hope out of your cynical back pocket and give it a go to find out for yourself:
- When you visit a new church (this can actually get you three wishes)
- When you sneeze three or more times in a row
- When you see a rainbow
- At a parade you've never been to before
- When the number signifying the time is equal to the number signifying the minute in a digital clock (i.e., 12:12). Note: those using military time can have double the chances!
- When throwing coins into a fountain
- When you find a penny (one cent) on the ground (more luck will come if you keep the penny in your shoe).
- When you see three birds on a telephone wire
- When you see a falling star or the first star of the night
- When an eyelash falls out, except if it falls out in the bathroom. Balance it on your fingertip, make the wish then blow the lash away as far as you can.
- When you have a ladybug in the palm of your hand (alive)
- When blowing all the needles out of the a dandelion in one go
- If you get the bigger half of a wishbone
- Before you eat a blue m&m
I personally love the last bit - and my wish is usually for more m&ms!
