Top 25 Most Played

Someone once told me that the music you play in your iPod says a lot about what you like, and it is like an intimate look into your personality. The Top 25 Most Played is especially revealing, as it shows preference and moods, all in one list. I took a look at mine and burst out laughing, because while there is a lot of Beyonce in there, there are also some surprises:

1. Breathe Slow - Alesha Dixon
2. Crazy In Love - Beyoncé
3. Don't You Remember - Adele
4. Airplanes (feat. Hayley Williams of Paramore) - B.o.B
5. Price Tag - Jessie J Feat. B.o.B
6. Let the Sun Shine - Labrinth
7. Kiss Me - Sixpence None the Richer
8. Irreplaceable - Beyoncé
9. Pass Out - Tinie Tempah
10. Life - Des'ree
11. Fireflies (UK Radio Edit) - Owl City
12. Diese Weg - Xavier Naidoo
13. No Regrets (Explicit Version) - Dappy
14. Geile Zeil - Juli
15. The A Team - Ed Sheeran
16. Chasing Cars - Snow Patrol
17. Run - Snow Patrol
18. Happy - Leona Lewis
19. F*ckin Perfect - Pink
20. Fix You - Coldplay
21. 99 Problems - Jay-Z
22. Chasing Pavements - Adele
23. I'll Be - Edwin McCaine
24. Read All About It (Feat Emeli Sande) - Professor Green
25. Gives You Hell - The All-American Rejects

Looking at this list is like looking down memory lane - I can actually recall (for most, not all songs) when I first heard the song or who recommended that I get it. So much of my musical taste is made up of my own preference, together with family and friends' influence, so it is actually nice to see that this part of me is made up of parts of different people too. It gives me comfort to know that even if everything is made up of matter, some of what makes up others' matter, matters to me.

So, for all those out there who are willing to bare a little piece of their soul - what's your top 25 most played songs? :)

Neruda Knows

Whenever I am at lost for words on how to describe what I am feeling, especially if the feelings have to do with love and the whole bag of rainbows and bones that come with it, I turn to Pablo, Pablo Neruda. He of the sharp wit and sharper words, he of the heartfelt, no-holes-barred, say-it-like-it-is word smith.

Tonight I do not look to the poem "Tonight I write the saddest lines..." because I am not sad, but proud, and I wanted to share this as it seems to capture my mood:

If You Forget Me by Pablo Neruda

I want you to know
one thing.

You know how this is:
if I look
at the crystal moon, at the red branch
of the slow autumn at my window,
if I touch
near the fire
the impalpable ash
or the wrinkled body of the log,
everything carries me to you,
as if everything that exists,
aromas, light, metals,
were little boats
that sail
toward those isles of yours that wait for me.

Well, now,
if little by little you stop loving me
I shall stop loving you little by little.

If suddenly
you forget me
do not look for me,
for I shall already have forgotten you.

If you think it long and mad,
the wind of banners
that passes through my life,
and you decide
to leave me at the shore
of the heart where I have roots,
remember
that on that day,
at that hour,
I shall lift my arms
and my roots will set off
to seek another land.

But
if each day,
each hour,
you feel that you are destined for me
with implacable sweetness,
if each day a flower
climbs up to your lips to seek me,
ah my love, ah my own,
in me all that fire is repeated,
in me nothing is extinguished or forgotten,
my love feeds on your love, beloved,
and as long as you live it will be in your arms
without leaving mine

And this is how I feel -a relationship is not defined by what other people's standards are. Rather, it is based on love and respect. A true, once-in-a-lifetime connection can only exist if both parties reciprocate this, in any type of familial love, friendship or romantic connection.

Thank you Pablo, once again, for your words.

Tak Copenhagen!

Dear Copenhagen,

Thank you for a much needed respite from my "real" life.

Thank you for the food, from the gourmet to the comfort, from the never-ending but delicious courses to the surprisingly different take on normal food that looks and tastes good and has completely spoiled my taste buds for any other cuisine.

Thank you for your cheery people, your friendly people, your knowledgeable-about-art-but-not-snooty-about-it people, your well-dressed-but-down-to-earth people, your proud-but-in-a-good-way people, and your smiling-even-at-strangers people.

Thank you for your sunshine, for the colours it reflected against windows of even more colourful houses and buildings, for the smell of the fresh air when it is just lightly touched by daylight, for the knowledge that no matter how strong the wind blows there will always be a source of warmth.

Thank you for the memories, the smiles you brought to my face, the laughter you bubbled out of me more times than I can count, the wonder of learning something new from something so old, the give and take of it all.

Thank you for making me realize and remember what life can be like, thank you for making me feel again, thank you for making me cry.

Love,
Julie
